About

Durban Jewish Social Services is the umbrella organization under which Jewel House falls. Situated on the property of the Jewish retirement home Beth Shalom, Jewel House runs independently as an assisted-living residential home caring for the needs of the most vulnerable members of the Durban Jewish community. These adults with mental, emotional, and physical challenges reside in a loving communal environment where all their needs are met. They are fortunate to have an outstanding team of dedicated and caring staff as well as a team of volunteers ensuring every one of their needs are met. The team consists of a dedicated Houseparent, the Beth Shalom Matron together with a full nursing and carer staff compliment, a social worker, occupational therapist, music therapist, and psychiatric nurse practitioner. Their love, support, and knowledge is evident when visiting our home. The residents of Jewel House attend the Masada Workshop, a sheltered employment workshop, where activities are catered to their various abilities.

Program of Services

Our residents enjoy special Shabbat meals and celebrate all the Chagim. Jewel House provides medical treatment as well as psychological and psychiatric treatment. The residents also attend Masada, a sheltered workshop, every day from 8:30 – 2:30. During the December holidays when Masada is closed, outings are organized for the residents. They thoroughly enjoy shows and events, as well as walks along the beachfront promenade. It’s a busy few weeks which they look forward to every year.

Our History

Jewel House was officially opened on October 30, 1988. It offers a home away from home for our most vulnerable community members who deserve and appreciate the special care they receive from our dedicated team.

The residents at Jewel House are very happy now that life is back to normal. Work at Masada and weekly outings have resumed.

There is also much excitement as Jewel House starts planning their relocation next year to the premises of Beth Shalom, in it’s own private wing.

“Every cent received from your generous donors makes a difference. Thank you from all the Jewel House residents." - Janine Saperson, Director.
